Congratulations to Mo'Nique!!!!! Mo'Nique is taking home a well deserved Golden Globe for her role in Precious. The Lee Daniels directed film "Precious: Based On The Novel By Sapphire" was nominated for three Golden Globe awards including Best Picture. Mo'Nique was nominated and won for best supporting actress. Her competition included the stunning Penelope Cruz for her role in Vicky Cristina Barcelona . Incredibly, when the movie was in production it didn't even have distribution. That was quickly remedied when Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry jumped in to the rescue. The all-star cast also includes Mariah Carey, Lenny Kravitz and Sherri Shepherd. Big Ups to Mo'Nique!!!

The 37th Annual American Music Awards went down last night. There was good bad and ugly (as usual). The good Jay-Z and Alicia Keys performing Empire State of Mind! Also, my girls Mary J. Blige, Whitney Houston and Janet Jackson (Hammer pants notwithstanding!) Whitney's performance was simply soul stirring -- it moved country singer Reba McEntire to tears. Other notable performances: Lady Gaga! Whether you like her or not her performances are always memorable. Now that we're done with the good, how about the bad! What was up with J Lo? Someone tweeted that her outfit was She by Sheree! And, then during her boxing match set she got knocked down (ok, she fell down)!!!! She got up fast though - if you blinked you missed it. Ok, now the ugly - Adam Lambert - there's so much bad and ugly here that I'm going to leave it alone but my guess is that he won't be back for an encore next year -- nasty, nasty, nasty!

Last night Atlanta played host to the 2009 Soul Train Awards which returned after a two year break. The who's who of the black music industry attended the event including, of course, co-hosts Taraji P. Hensen and Terrence Howard, Charlie Wilson, Chaka Khan, Toni Braxton, Keri Hilson, Monica, Chrisette Michelle, Keith Sweat, MC Hammer, Fantasia (who has lost much weight and looks great!), Chico DeBarge and the list goes on. However, there were quite a few big no shows as well. Among the no shows: Beyonce, Kanye West, Maxwell, Mary Mary, Ne-Yo, Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Hudson and Drake. The absentees were glaring because many of them won awards but were not present to accept. Beyonce won several awards including Best Album. Mary, Mary and Maxwell also won awards. Some of the moments of note, Charlie Wilson receiving the Soul Train Legend Award and a special tribute performance. The tribute included performances by Keith Sweat, Genuwine, Raheem DeVaughn, Brian Mcknight, K-Ci and JoJo and Kandi. Angie Stone did a tribute to Chaka Khan by performing "Ain't Nobody". The act was highlighted by Chaka jumping in at the end to duet with Angie spontaneously (hope this isn't edited out!).

VH1 Hip Hop Honors aired on October 13. This year VH1 took a different approach and rather than honoring icons in the hip hop industry, the decision was made to honor an iconic label in the hip hop music industry: Def Jam. Throughout the show the founders of of Def Jam talk about their experiences. Lyor Cohen described Def Jam as the "Aamco Transmission" of the industry where they were willing to get under the car and get dirty unlike some other labels (he threw Bad Boy Records under the proverbial bus when he mentioned that they were probably unwilling to do the same for fear of soiling their shiny Versace suits!). Hustle "Russell" Simmons described Def Jam as the "most respectful of the culture" as he sat with Def Jam co-founder Rick Rubin during the pre-recorded segments. Mr. Rubin looking very much like a live Buddha - shoeless, long haired and cross legged joked about Russell wearing a fake Rolex back in the day. Boy. how things have changed!! During the show, Kevin Liles sat with his compadre Russell. The always fly L.A. Reid was also in the building. L.L. was not present but he was honored (by uber fan Eminem) and L.L. also did a pre-recorded segment.
Some performances of note included Ashanti and Ja Rule, DMX (he's still got the same energy!), Mary J. Blige and Method Man preformed their legendary duo "You're All I Need to Get By". The closing medley was also very memorable. It included Kidd Rock, Fabolous and Foxy Brown (Foxy looked like she was about to lift off with those eyelashes!) and I loved Chrisette Michelle (although she didn't sing much she looked awesome!) Tracey Morgan did a good job as the host which also included some comedic pre-recorded sketches. Love Tracey's hairdos (now that was "good hair")!
RED CARPET ARRIVALS
Fabolous, Ashanti (I love her new look but I'm not sure if she's owning it yet), and the original femail Ruff Ryder Eve!

Chrisette Michelle (love her but not that outfit!), Flavor Flav and Warren G

Foxy Brown, Luda and always repping for the Boogie Down KRS One.
