Three of R&B’s most remarkable voices have joined female forces for a noteworthy cause — empowering millions more to use their voices to bring about positive change. “The power to move the world begins with a single voice, and a single voice can be the match to light the fire of hope, love and progress for women and the world,” a statement from the Queen Project team. That’s the mission for The Queen Project, a pro-social movement started by award-winning R&B/soul singers Tamia, Deborah Cox, and Kelly Price. “We all share the same passion for music but it was our pro-social and charitable work that bought us together,” says Grammy-winner Kelly Price.
The 37th Annual American Music Awards went down last night. There was good bad and ugly (as usual). The good Jay-Z and Alicia Keys performing Empire State of Mind! Also, my girls Mary J. Blige, Whitney Houston and Janet Jackson (Hammer pants notwithstanding!) Whitney's performance was simply soul stirring -- it moved country singer Reba McEntire to tears. Other notable performances: Lady Gaga! Whether you like her or not her performances are always memorable. Now that we're done with the good, how about the bad! What was up with J Lo? Someone tweeted that her outfit was She by Sheree! And, then during her boxing match set she got knocked down (ok, she fell down)!!!! She got up fast though - if you blinked you missed it. Ok, now the ugly - Adam Lambert - there's so much bad and ugly here that I'm going to leave it alone but my guess is that he won't be back for an encore next year -- nasty, nasty, nasty!
Co-host of the popular talk show "The View", star of her own sitcom "Sherri" and now best selling author, Sherri Shepherd stopped in Atlanta to promote her new book “Permission Slips: Every Woman’s Guide to Giving Herself a Break.” (Grand Central Publishing, $24.99). Basically, the book is about women allowing themselves a break i.e. "me time". My friends all know that I strongly espouse this life philosophy. If I die tomorrow, trust me I have given myself a lot of "permission" to do things I won't expound upon here! Sherri is one of the most personable celebrities I have ever met. Sherri is real, down-to-earth and funny as hell. She spoke for a few minutes (actually much longer than that!) about some of her life experiences as a single mom, being a former Jehovah's witness, working on The View and her challenges raising a special needs child. Sherri is extremely likeable and relatable as witnessed by her "grassroots" book tour. Sherri didn't stop in a swanky book store in Buckhead, rather she held a book signing at the Decatur Recreation Center without lots of media hoopla and lots of real fans. Gotta love it!!! Check out the pictures!
Sherri's book discusses her life views on love, relationships, religion, etc. In an interview with Access Atlanta Sherri explained why she wrote the book "I wrote this book because I feel like as women we are always trying to hold it together and be the perfect wife, mother, friend, co-worker and inside we are truly a mess. We seem to be the nurturers of our home. It was easier in our moms’ day to hold it together. We have so much more to hold together. Even now there is the guilt. At the park, your child falls, a man goes, “Did you break an arm? ” Women go, “Am I a bad mother? Is someone going to be mad at me?” We just carry a lot of guilt about not being a superwoman"
A stunningly beautiful, 43 year old, Janet Jackson finally broke her silence in an interview with ABC's Robin Roberts. For the first time ever, Janet allowed Robin Roberts, television cameras and the world into her Malibu, California home. Janet spoke on how the family tried to intervene on Michael's behalf but to no avail. A very poised, demure yet quietly confident, Janet is still very torn over Michael's death. She admits not having seen the blockbuster movie about the King of Pop, "This is It". "I don't know if I will ever see it but I definitely can't see it right now...too soon, too hard".
Superstar philanthropist and humanitarian Wyclef Jean performed at the Nokia Theatre in New York at an exclusive lunch time jam session for the media and a handful of adoring fans. Wyclef was joined on stage by none other than New York's own Maino!! Of course, Red Carpet Shelley was invited and the team was on the scene!
This lunch-time jam session with Wyclef was sponsored by Western Union who also gave a huge check ($225,000) to Wyclef's charity Yele. Yele is a Haitian grassroots movement inspiring change in Haiti through programs in education, sports, the arts and environment. I love this guy! Wyclef has single-handedly put Haiti on the philanthropic map. He works tirelessly to raise funds, awareness and love for Haiti. Keep up the good work Wyclef!
The 37-year old Grammy Award winner is promoting his new CD project “From the Hut, to the Projects, to the Mansion”, which was released on November 10. He partnered with mix tape master DJ Drama, a New York hip-hop DJ who is synonymous with all things hip hop in New York. He opened up with a guitar solo singing “No Woman No Cry”. He also performed Fugee songs and old songs “Hips don’t lie”. He even had a professional belly dancer, in lieu of Shakira, give a few handpicked fans lessons on stage! It was bananas! At the end of the concert, as promised, Wyclef gave out $50.00 Western Union cards to fans. It was the best free lunch I ever had! Check out the video footage (click read more).
